A Prayer for Panic Attacks and Anxiety | BibleWhen I was trapped in this cycle of fear, panic attacks and confusion, I had prayers printed out that I would often read through and listen to. With my mind racing, it was difficult to focus and really press in; so, having a simple way to pray and refocus my mind was very helpful.

This week, I wanted to simply provide a prayer and supporting scriptures that you can print out and use.

Prayer

Father, who lives and rules in Heaven, let your Kingdom come to earth and be established through me (Matthew 6:10). There is no fear, no anxiety, and no panic in Heaven. Establish your Kingdom in my heart, that I may walk in peace, in confidence and in strength. Open the eyes of my heart (Luke 24:31) to see all that you have for me. Show me how I have already been blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3). Help me to receive all that you have for me.

Angels are all around me, ministering to me (Hebrews 1:14). They will guard me according to your word and your command (Psalms 103:20-21). You will not let my foot stumble (Proverbs 3:23).I trust in you, Father, and in you alone. I am your child, and you are my Father (Matthew 23:9). I am seated with Christ in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6). I am at rest in your arms.

Father, I look to you as my Source of hope and of peace. You cover me with your wings (Psalm 91:4) and you are constantly fighting for me (2 Chronicles 20:17). Show me that I need not fight, but that I can just rest in you and rest in the promises of your protection (Exodus 14:13). There is no need for me to stress or worry. You will provide everything I need for life, for peace and for protection (Matthew 6:33).

Today, I will not be anxious about anything (Philippians 4:6), but I will pray to you about everything, casting my cares upon you because you care for me (1 Peter 5:7). You will guide me along the best pathway for me life. You will advise me and counsel me (Psalm 32:8). You will never leave me alone (Hebrews 13:5). You are always with me. Always. Sin cannot separate us (Romans 8:38-39), because in Christ, you remember our sins no more (Romans 10:17).

Thank you, Father, that you have begun a good work in me and that you’ll be faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6). I will listen with my heart for you are constantly speaking peace over me (Psalm 85:8). You have the word of life! Father, live in me and through me. I put all my trust in you.

Why should God answer my prayers?

Why should God answer my prayers?Have you ever felt like your prayers are not being heard? You pray for peace, healing, or financial provision, but it seems like nothing happens. You press in deep with fasting, dedication and devotion, but still, the response is painful silence. You start to question, “Why should God answer my prayers?”

That’s actually a really good question. Why should God answer your prayers?

Think about it for a moment. Stop reading this message, get a piece of paper and write down why you think God should answer your prayers.

Do any of these sound familiar:

  • I prayed for a long time.
  • I fasted when I prayed.
  • I have been very devoted this week.
  • I really meant it when I prayed.
  • I repented of all my sins.
  • I ended my prayer with “in Jesus’ name”.
  • I’ve done lots of good things this week.

While these sound good and important on the surface, these are not reasons why God should hear answer our prayers.

Prayers don’t move God

That sounds wrong, doesn’t it? We’ve been taught to press in, intercede and “move heaven” with our prayers, but I don’t believe it’s scriptural.I don’t believe we can move God with our prayers, because God already moved on our behalf 2,000 years ago when Jesus died on the cross. Everything that we can ask for today was provided through Christ: salvation, healing (physical and emotional), freedom, provision, and deliverance.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3, emphasis mine).

We should pray that God will open our eyes and renew our minds to what we already have in Christ.

You will never be good enough

Often when we pray, we feel like our prayers are heard more when we’re doing good and less when we’re doing bad. When we sin, we rarely go to God in prayer thinking that our mistakes will hinder our prayers. We believe that our good works please God and that our sin displeases God.

There’s only one thing that pleases God: faith. Believing pleases God.

“Without faith (believing) it is impossible to please Him” (Hebrews 11:6).

So, what do we need to believe? We must believe that…

Only Christ is good enough

No matter how hard we try, we cannot be good enough.

“There is none who does good, no, not one” (Romans 3:12).

That is why God sent his Son into the earth. Jesus was the perfect, sinless sacrifice (Hebrews 7:26). Through his life on the earth, he fulfilled all requirements of the Law (Romans 8:3-4).

Only Christ is good enough.

In Christ, God hears our prayers

When we receive Christ into our hearts, we immediately receive his righteousness, his goodness. God takes our sin and replaces it with the righteousness of Christ. Here’s how 2 Corinthians 5:21 describes it:

“For [God] made [Jesus] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

In Christ, God only sees our goodness. That is why we should pray for God to renew our minds and transform us from the inside out (identity) not from the outside in (actions).

For God to hear and answer your prayers, remember these two things:

  1. Put your faith in Christ. Start by making that heavenly exchange (replacing your sin with Christ’s righteousness).
  2. When you pray, do not trust in your ability to do good. Trust only in Christ’s goodness.

In my own life, I have seen an incredible transformation from fear to peace. It did not come through great Bible studies, long periods of fasting or doing good in my life. It came from putting all my faith and trust in the goodness of Christ.

Prayer: Father, open my eyes to this truth that answered prayer comes through the goodness of Christ. Help me see that I am righteous in Christ.

How to Pray against Anxiety Attacks, Panic and Fear

When anxious and fearful thoughts come flooding in, it can be very difficult to quiet your mind and connect with God in prayer. In the middle of a panic attack, the last thing on your mind is getting alone with God. But, prayer can be very helpful in stopping those confusing and terrifying thoughts.

Learning how to pray can calm an anxious mind and fill your heart with peace:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6, 7).

When anxious thoughts, fear, panic or worry come against you, present your requests to God. Pray and petition him, and as you do, his peace which goes beyond all understanding will guide your hearts and mind in Christ. This is more than just a recommendation—it’s a truth that can transform a fearful mind into a mind of peace.

Here are some steps that have helped me connect with God:

1.  Believe

Faith is essential. Without faith, it’s impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). We must believe that God will respond to our prayers. If we doubt, we are like a wave tossed about by the sea, unsettled in all our ways (James 1:5). Here’s how Jesus explains it:

Jesus said to the disciples, “Have faith in God. I assure you that you can say to this mountain, ‘May God lift you up and throw you into the sea,’ and your command will be obeyed. All that’s required is that you really believe and do not doubt in your heart. Listen to me! You can pray for anything, and if you believe, you will have it” (Mark 11:22-24).

2. God hears you

I think we’ve all wondered, “God, do you really hear me?” We pray and pray and it seems like nothing changes. We beg for freedom, we cry out for a respite of peace, but it seems so elusive. We hear a thought in our head, God does not hear my prayers and we think it’s our thought. Quietly, we agree with this subtle attack of the devil. The enemy constantly accuses us and lies to us. He is the father of lies (John 10:10) and he spews his lies and confusion all over of us to thwart God’s beautiful plans for our lives.  We cannot give into this voice that says God does not hear our prayers. God listens.

Another subtle lie from the enemy is that we are not worthy enough for God to hear our prayers. It’s just not true! When you receive Christ, you are instantly made worthy. He took our sins and we took his righteousness. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says it this way, “God made [Jesus] who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Now that you are righteous in Christ, you can boldly come to the throne of grace in your time of need (Hebrews 4:16).

3. Know who you are in Christ

Too often, we approach God in prayer with a sinner mentality. “Lord, I’m a wretched sinner. Woe is me! I’m not worthy to come before you.” This way of thinking is wrong. Once you receive Christ, you are no longer a slave—you are a child of God!

“You are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, everything he has belongs to you” (Galatians 4:7).

In Christ, you are a child of the Most High God. You are special! You are cherished, loved, protected and pursued by God. You are his child!

4. Words carry power

We must be very careful about the words we speak. Words carry incredible spiritual power. Death and life are in the power of our words (Proverbs 18:21). Salvation comes when we confess with our mouth and believe in our hearts (Romans 10:9). Whether good or evil, people speak what’s in their hearts. Jesus said it this way, “Whatever is in your heart determines what you say. A good person produces good words from a good heart, and an evil person produces evil words from an evil heart” (Matthew 12:34, 35).

If you want to experience peace, don’t speak evil, doubting words. If you feel an anxious thought coming on, don’t say, “I’m probably going to have another panic attack.” No! Don’t speak those words. Rather, pray something like this, “Father, my body feels anxious right now, but you said that you will give me perfect peace when my mind is focused upon you. Right now, Lord, I fix my thoughts upon you. I trust in you!”

5.  Build your prayer muscle

Prayer is a lot like a muscle. You need to work on it, strengthen it and build it up. Don’t wait till you need it to start strengthening it.

A professional athlete doesn’t start working out the day before a big race. It takes months and months, even years, to develop the ability to race well. In the same way, we should pray daily, flexing and strengthening our prayer-time muscle.

“Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this life and the next” (1 Timothy 4:8).

Prayer: Father, this week, teach me to pray effectively. Show me how to build and strengthen my prayer muscle so that when anxiety, panic or fear hits, I can rest in the confidence that you are with me.

A Good Father – Asking God for help in times of need

The other day, my son came to me and asked, “Daddy, can you help me with this game?” It was a simple request. Yes, I was busy doing something when he asked, but I stopped what I was doing and helped him. Since I had it within my power to help him, why wouldn’t I?

In the simplest of terms: he needed my help, and I could help him. So, I did.

Now, let me ask you this–if I, an earthly father, have such a strong desire to help my child with something, how much more does our Heavenly Father want to help us in our time of need?

Matthew 7:9-11 describes this simple truth. “You parents–if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! If you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.”

Do you need God’s help in your life? Maybe you’re facing a difficult situation–a job loss, marital problems, a crippling illness. Are you feeling lost and lonely? Do you need some emotional and spiritual strength? Let me encourage you to turn to your Heavenly Father. He’s there, and he wants to help you.

You may say, “I don’t know where to start.” Or, “I don’t know what to do.” Sometimes, in the dark seasons of our lives, it’s hard to know what we should do. When Caleb, my son, was confused about what he should do regarding this game, he took the first step towards finding a solution–he asked his father.

I want to encourage you this week with these two verses that precede the previously quoted scripture: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened” (v. 7, 8).

This week, I encourage you to take some time to ask. Talk to your Father in heaven. Listen to him speak his encouraging words over you. He wants to help you. He wants to give you good gifts. Why? Because he’s a good Father.

Prayer: Father, I need your help. I need you to reach down from heaven and strengthen me with your peace and your rest. I ask in faith, believing that you will touch my heart and my mind, giving me the strength to rise above the fears and anxieties of this world.

God is waiting for you, to give you peace

“The LORD waits for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the LORD is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for him to help them” (Isaiah 30:18).

In the first part of this verse, who’s the one waiting? Who is the one being patient? God is. He’s the one waiting for you to come to him. How long has he been waiting? A day? An hour? A month? A lifetime?

But why is God waiting for you to come to him? Is he waiting to pounce on your every mistake? Is he waiting to condemn you for your actions? Is he going to point out your faults and failures? Is that why he is waiting for you?

No. He is waiting for you to come to him so that he can show you his love and compassion “for the LORD is a faithful God.”

Instead of running to our heavenly refuge when things come crashing in on us, we often run away from God to a counterfeit refuge–a beer, a television show, a cigarette, a romance novel, a busy project, a tranquilizer–something to distract our minds from the storm of uninvited thoughts.

In our time of need, we should run to God with all of our heart and ask him for help. Listen carefully to the very next verse: “He will be gracious if you ask for help. He will respond instantly to the sound of your cries” (v. 19).

Instantly! Did you catch how fast this infinite, timeless God will answer your pleas for help? Instantly! “Well Russell,” you may respond, “I’ve prayed and prayed for peace but this fear still haunts me. God is not answering my cries for help instantly.” Maybe God’s definition of “instantly” lies in the next two verses:

“Though the Lord gave you adversity for food and affliction for drink, he will still be with you to teach you. You will see your teacher with your own eyes, and you will hear a voice say, ‘This is the way; turn around and walk here'” (v. 20-21).

How many of you have experienced this drink of affliction and food of adversity? I’ve feasted on these things many times. Yet, God promises that he will teach us through this affliction and adversity. He will guide us with his gentle voice, telling us which way we should walk.

Maybe God’s definition of “instantly” is this: the time it takes him to guide us through this affliction and adversity, teaching us to trust him no matter what happens. Maybe God’s “instantly” has an eternal purpose, a deeper objective rather than just freeing us from our present discomfort. Maybe the length of our “instantly” is based on our willingness to surrender our lives, our decisions, our ambitions to God so that he can teach us to completely trust in him with everything in our life.

Prayer: Father, I cry out to you right now. By faith, I know you will respond instantly with love and compassion.
